The pedestrians of Liege

Vélo 4

Here we share with you other good tips and information about walking in our beautiful Burning City.

Did you know that? Liège has one of the oldest pedestrian walkways in Belgium, dating back to 1965, which now extends over 6km and 60 streets that are dedicated to pedestrians only. We therefore have the largest pedestrian area in the Walloon region in our city!

Liege has always paid particular attention to the safety of pedestrians. Moreover, Liege was one of the first European cities to draw up a pedestrian plan. You can easily find this plan on the website of the City of Liege via the following link:

Furthermore, our city is continuing its efforts to develop the quality of pedestrian paths, in particular through the extension of the pedestrian walkway, the construction of the Belle Liégeoise footbridge and the gradual reappropriation of the banks of the left bank.

And it doesn't stop there, one of the urban projects for 2025 was to make Liege entirely pedestrian. And how? By building outdoor parking lots and organizing a shuttle system via public transport to reach the city center from these parking lots. The goal is to encourage walking in the center but also to develop green spaces in the city center by replacing the old parking lots with greenery. Nevertheless, even if the pedestrian area is growing, we are still far from reaching this goal for 2025 because of the delays of the streetcar works, so let's hope that this beautiful project will be relaunched with bigger scope in the near future!
