The Uliège Bike Workshop

The bike workshop is a service provided by the University of Liege for anyone with a ULiège card (staff members and students included). They offer different services to cyclists, notably for repairs (see the section on Repairs & Training) but as far as getting a bike is concerned, here is what they offer (depending on available stocks)

  • sale of new bikes at low cost
  • sale of reconditioned bikes at low cost (possibility to donate old bikes)
  • sale of spare parts and small accessories
  • provision of bikes to Erasmus students for a specific period
  • loan of an electrically assisted bicycle (VAE) for a period of one month (only for staff members)

The University of Liege lends electrically assisted bicycles to staff members for periods of 4 weeks. To learn more about this action, please contact the mobility cell (sedeplacer@uliege.be).

To find out if you are eligible for this service, please fill in this form (including certain criteria) so that the Mobility Unit can analyse your request.

Recharging stations are available on the Sart Tilman campus of ULiège. It is possible to recharge your electric bike in front of the Agora restaurant (B62) or at the back of the Amphitheaters of Europe (B4).

It is important to bring a small padlock to secure the box while recharging!

Service bicycles at ULiège

Some departments and faculties of the University of Liege invest in the purchase or rental of service bikes:

Other solutions to get a bike

Pro Velo - Velocity

  • Bike and equipment rental

At Pro Velo Liège (place des Guillemins 2) you can rent a quality bike for a few hours or long term (3, 6, 9 or 12 months) and at attractive prices. They offer different types of bikes according to your needs (classic, cargo, folding, electric bike). They also manage the rental of the fleets of bicycles of various cities in particular of Liege with Vélocité and Gembloux with DjiblouCyclettes.

Via this formula, you have the bike at your disposal 24 hours a day and can therefore use the bike for all your travels without time constraints or obligation to park at a terminal. Pro Vélo offers you some equipment, indeed locks and seats for children are provided free of charge. Maintenance and replacement of worn parts are also included in the package.

Blue-bike

The SNCB offers a bike rental system in the stations, Blue-bike. In Liege, this service is available at the Guillemins station. If you take the train, this system is very convenient to reach your school or your workplace from the station. Once the Blue-Bike is unlocked, it is yours until you return to the station. The system is quite simple, you just have to get a Blue-bike card online or in a bike shop. Then, your card will be valid in all major SNCB stations.

Self-service bicycles

Another solution we offer is the rental of self-service electric bikes. In Liège, this is done through the company TIER. The university has agreed that this operator deploys its fleet on the university domain.

You will find here a map showing the authorized parking points and the limited speed zones for bikes and scooters on the Sart Tilman campus.

The pluses and minuses

This form of self-service allows you to use the bikes without owning them. This is very practical if you don't have a safe place to park your bike. Indeed, with the Velocité formula, you have the bike at your disposal during the whole rental period, which is more or less long. You must then take the bike home. Whereas with a self-service rental, you use the bike only for your journey and it must be parked in dedicated areas (on a practical level, it is similar to the principle of self-service electric scooter rental).

However, self-service bikes can have a certain cost in the long run. Whereas the cost of a bike via Velocity is low in the long run. In addition, the "I leave my bike on the street" aspect (or my scooter in the case of self-service scooters) can raise concerns from an ecological and space-use perspective.
